What is a developmental disability?

Let’s first get on the same page to what a developmental disabilities actually is. Developmental disabilities come in a variety of different forms. Some may be purely physical, such as blindness. They may affect mental ability, such as Autism. And, in many cases they are both physical and mental, such as Down Syndrome. These diagnoses usually have a life-long impact, and affect everyday living. Depending on the severity of the disability, many individuals rely on a full-time caregiver.  

Third-party disability services providers or disability agencies exist to support and empower individuals who require daily care.

Why would someone need a disability service agency?

A parent or guardian who is a primary caregiver, may reach out to a disability agency or seek out support services when the 24/7 demands of caring for their child or loved one, or the severity of the diagnosis, becomes more than they can feasibly handle. When you actually think about the effort required to take care of someone full-time – preparing meals, administering medication, ongoing support – and balancing these tasks with things like grocery shopping, doing laundry, ad maintaining full-time work... it is easy to see how a caregiver could easily become overburdened, exhausted, and stressed. 

This is where disability agencies like us are able to assist. We act as an extension of our clients’ families. The added benefit is that a single caregiver becomes replaced with a dedicated, highly qualified team of professionals that collaborate to provide leading care and support. 

Disability services in Alberta

Without accessible disability services, many individuals would not have the support they require to have a stable, enriched life. Disability services vary depending on the disability agency – their methods, values, and internal processes to name a few. Typical services include full-time residential care in a group home setting, programs for youth, employment services, and assisted living. There are many things to consider when selecting a disability agency that is the right fit, our province has some incredible agencies that you can reach out to.

How to Access Our Services

Individuals who qualify for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) or Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) services, are eligible for our Residential Care program and Community Access Supports program. Please speak to your PDD or FSCD Coordinator to find out more.
