Employer Spotlight – Liberty Security

Partnering to Make a Difference

Liberty provides security, automation, and energy management solutions to residential, commercial and health care customers across Canada. Over the course of the last couple years, Liberty’s Edmonton office has employed 3 individuals with developmental disabilities who are part of our Framework for Life Program.

Liberty became an Employer Partner after installing the security system for the Entrust head office. They quickly became intrigued with the company and wanted to learn more about our work – the conversation started about how they could get involved by offering Meaningful Employment.

They sat down with Entrust team member, Rory, and began creating an employment plan with a clearly defined role, responsibilities, and schedule. It soon became clear for Liberty that this was going to be a straightforward process, with the benefits for everyone involved.

"It was easy for us to make the decision to hire someone with a disability because It is no different than hiring anyone else. Regardless of who you are hiring, you must always go through the process of finding a good fit for your company culture and for the role." - Jeff

Meaningful Employment

Colin is currently working with Liberty. With his Entrust Mentor accompanying him, Colin works at Liberty’s Edmonton office twice a week for 3-hour shifts. Colin is always excited to come to work and enjoys spending time with his co-workers over lunch break. He is a great addition to the team; his positive attitude is infectious! When Colin shows up to work, he knows exactly what to do, and gets to work. He is very hard working and is a pleasure to have around the shop!

Colin provides a great deal of help in the general maintenance and administration of our office. During his shifts, he makes sure our shop looks great, the front lawn is maintained, our large front windows are clean, and the office is generally tidy. Colin also has proven to be an asset in helping us with general office administration duties like filing, stock management, inventory counting, and scanning.

Working with Rory at Entrust made it easy to develop a position at Liberty for someone with a disability. Everyone at the Liberty Edmonton office would agree that the experience has been nothing but positive.

"It has been amazing knowing that we are helping each other – we provide Colin with a community and with meaningful work that he can be proud of; Colin provides us with his dedication, work ethic, and positivity." - Jeff

For Liberty, there is no question in whether they would continue this program or recommend it to others – It has been such a positive experience overall that their only regret is not hiring more inclusively sooner. Employers who practice inclusive hiring practices make a significant impact in the lives of those with developmental disabilities; meaningful employment is an opportunity that we can all benefit from.
